As a popular beach and nightlife destination, it is no surprise that Miami, Florida has been ranked as the top city in the United States for expats to live and work abroad. According to a survey of over 12,000 respondents from InterNations, an online expat community, Miami placed 12th out of 50 global cities. New York City also made the list, ranking 16th out of 50. The survey, conducted in February 2022 and released in November, asked expats to rate their satisfaction in five main categories: quality of life, ease of settling in, personal finance, working abroad, and "expat essentials."
Expats in Miami noted that it was easy to settle in and adjust to the local culture, and they had access to high-speed internet and the ability to pay without using cash. However, they reported dissatisfaction with the city's public transit and unaffordable healthcare. In New York, expats praised the city's strong job market and personal career opportunities, but 58% were unhappy with the high cost of living.
Despite the challenges, a majority of expats in both Miami and New York expressed overall satisfaction with their lives in the cities. In Miami, 85% were happy with their lives, while 74% of expats in New York felt the same. Valencia, Spain was ranked as the top city for expats to live and work abroad, followed by Dubai and Mexico City.
